The "So What" Guide:  The Big "So, what?"

The Big So What here is that we are in an era of change—and we're talking sweeping changes , not just little adjustments, and they’re not temporary or optional.  And things are changing not only in healthcare, but on a much larger scale throughout the U.S. and around the world—changes pushed forward by the advent of new technologies, the sharing of new (and old) political and societal ideas and ideals, and the post-post-modern world notion that we can’t live on a planet where only a few reap the best of its bounty.

Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

Negotiating your practice or organization through ongoing changes means paying close and constant attention (see Jud's sidebar, for some current examples) to what’s changing and what's staying the same.  Once you have a good grasp of the "what" of what's changing, you need to analyze (or find someone to analyze for you) how changes might have an effect on your practice.  And finally you need to develop and adopt policies and procedures for how your business or organization should respond to change--plans that position you not only respond, but also to take best advantage of the question, “How can we benefit from these changes?”

Becoming a Change Specialist

PBN’s true specialty is revenue cycle management and related practice management services, not predicting the future or even providing healthcare industry journalism.  But as part of our own business plans to adapt to changes, we started sharing our research and publishing it in the PBN Minute three years ago this coming July, when the topic was . . . change!

Our Sources

If we were in the business of journalism, we’d be bound to the old dictum, “never reveal your sources.” Since we’re not, we’re happy to share our sources with you as a gift to help you get started with your own in-depth change tracking and planning efforts—and of course we’ll keep you up to date with more issues in the PBN Minute.

  The more things change . . .

. . . the more they behave like Congress and CMS.

As we bring our "So What?" Guide series to a close, congress kicked the can again (I think it's the ninth time !  now) on physician pay under the SGR clause of Medicare . . . and CMS extended the deadline (actually announced their intention to extend it) for when the date the adoption of ICD-10 is required.
