Special Issue: CMS Issues Notice of Pending Instructions to Hold Claims Starting January 1

Politicians Playing Politics with Your Money

Hold may last 2 weeks, should have minimal impact

CMS sent out a notice on Monday anticipating that Congress will experience difficulty in agreeing how to pay for an SGR fix and how long it should last.  In the notice, CMS states that it will instruct its Medicare claims administration contractors to hold claims for services delivered in the first two weeks of the new year.  Services delivered prior to that date are unaffected.  CMS plans to notify contractors sometime in the next three weeks regarding the status of the hold.

According to the CMS notice, "The hold should have minimal impact on provider cash flow because, under current law, clean electronic claims are not paid sooner than 14 calendar days (29 days for paper claims) after the date of receipt."
